I’ve been mentoring data engineers for many years now and I’m frequently asked how to speed up progression to more senior roles. Often, these data engineers have great technical skills but are struggling to advance further in their careers.
There are tons of articles and resources online helping data engineers learn new technical skills from SQL and Python to building ML models. These resources are useful for helping you hone and craft your technical skillset, and these will help you progress through your career.
However, there aren’t anywhere near as many resources teaching you career skills. These are the skills that help you set goals, understand which skills you need to learn, how to prioritize, how to interview, and ultimately how to hop to the next job role.
Many people have this notion that to become a senior you need 10+ years of experience. This is false. In this post, I’ll be giving you a brief outline of the career skills you should learn if you want to go from junior to senior data engineer in under 5 years.
