Somebody recently asked me what I would have done differently that would have unlocked my career growth faster.

This is a great question to ask a mentor or anyone in a role or position you would like to be in one day. Once you’ve finished reading this go and ask someone immediately!

This question made me think about my path to becoming a data architect and how it could have been accelerated with a few key learnings. In this post, I will lay out what those learnings are, hoping it accelerates your career too.

Understand The Business

The first step to switching your brain from data engineer mode to data architect mode is to understand the business you are working for.

It’s easy to get lost in the weeds when picking up tickets, building pipelines, and modifying existing transformations. We often don't stop to think or ask why we are doing these things.
