How OpenAI’s Acquisition of Rockset Could Shape the Future

This is just a quick introductory note that the following is all speculation as I have no insider knowledge of what is happening.

OpenAI recently purchased Rockset for an undisclosed amount. Rockset is a real-time analytics database company founded by former Meta engineers. They built Rockset on top of RocksDB with the aim of simplifying real-time data ingestion and analytics with high performance.

The question I’ll be trying to answer in this post is why? Why purchase a database company instead of just using its services off the shelf? Why would OpenAI have a need for this technology internally, what does this tell us about their future plans?

To do this I’ll be looking into 3 areas. First, we can look into the reasons why any company acquires another one. Second, we can look at the internal use cases for Rockset inside of OpenAI and finally, we can look at what it may mean for users of OpenAI tools.
